Do you remember the show Scandrew and Charlotte: Two of a Kind that aired on Nicktoons in letterboxed widescreen from 2005 to 2007? It was about 2 kids named Sammy and Tina that befriended 2 large titular Pixls.
Well, I managed to find a few updates of this show.
Firstly, the British feed of Nicktoons replaced Rocko's Modern Life with that show and the Australian feed of Nickelodeon aired this during the time kids would usually be at bed.
Also, I managed to find a 5-minute 30-second pitch pilot for the show but I can't upload it due to copyright.
It also aired on Jetix in the UK and Cartoon Network in Australia.

Fun fact: Sometimes shows aired in one country before they even premiered in the homeland. This was pretty common back in the day, especially with Nicktoons. S&C:ToAK was way ahead of its time with blending live-action with serious stop-motion.

Nah, I think it was a 2D-3D animated series. The series utilized computer animation combined with 3D using AutoDesk Maya.

The use of Autodesk Maya for Scandrew and Charlotte was quite innovative when you consider its competitors at the time. The integration of 3D models into 2D environments allowed for a broad spectrum of creative opportunities in this kind of show. The industry was really pushing boundaries with hybrid animation during those years.

Yeah, I remember that show! The animation style was pretty unique for its time, mixing 2D and 3D. It kinda gives me early 2000s vibes, like how they used to experiment with blending animation types back then. I think Maya was super popular for that.

Wow, I've been looking into this show for years. So many people insist it didn't exist, haha! Can’t say I'm surprised about the weird airing times. If you find a way to share that pilot, even if just screenshots or summaries, we'd love it.

Oh man, I totally forgot about Scandrew and Charlotte! I remember catching the show on Jetix. It was such a quirky storyline. It's wild how different Nickelodeon shows could be back then. I gotta see if I've still got my VHS recordings somewhere.

Never heard of this one... Were the Pixls these, like, giant 3D characters? Sounds wild lol. Can't believe Jetix and Cartoon Network were in on it too.

Exactly. This used to be my nostalgia because it aired on a preschool block on Channel 5 called Milkshake!.

Actually, 'Milkshake!' on Channel 5 was a treasure trove of kids' shows! It's quite possible that 'Scandrew and Charlotte: Two of a Kind' was one of those lesser-known gems that didn't quite get the attention it deserved. Shows like this are often overshadowed by bigger names but have a unique charm. I wonder if there are any clips floating around online?

I managed to find a full episode ripped from Milkshake!. I got in touch with the British distributor for the show, BBC Studios, and they said that they pulled it from Milkshake! because it was for older children.
0
Ah, figures the BBC would pull something like that. They did the same with other shows. Probably thought it clashed with the rest of the Milkshake! lineup or something. But more importantly, was the writing any good? Or were they just trying to fill time slots with something that seemed quirky?

That's super interesting. I wonder if it was a strategic decision or just an oversight. Back in the mid-2000s, animated content was often misclassified based on vague content ratings. It's possible 'Scandrew and Charlotte: Two of a Kind' had elements that broadcasters deemed unsuitable for younger audiences, despite its innocent appearance. I remember the show having some rather sophisticated themes embedded in the fun and whimsical storylines. Definitely curious to watch the episode and analyze it. Can you tell if there's any thematic differences between versions aired on Milkshake! versus other networks like Jetix or Nicktoons?

Nice find! I'm seriously bummed they thought it was for older kids. Those Pixls had such crazy adventures! 😆 Honestly, it's a shame more people haven't seen it. Anyone know a place to share this stuff w/o breaking the rules? For research purposes only, of course... 😅

Whoa, didn't realize the BBC had the rights! I remember watching some edgy cartoons on Milkshake! back in the day. It's wild what networks choose to air sometimes, especially for kids. Do you know if they ever plan on reviving it or releasing it officially?

Omg, I used to love watching Milkshake! back in the day! Those early morning cartoons were the best start to my weekends lol. I don’t really remember Scandrew and Charlotte, but it definitely sounds like that kinda quirky show I’d binge before school. Wish they’d bring back some of these classics.

Fun fact: S&C:ToAK was one of the first shows that experimented with letterboxed widescreen on Nicktoons. The pitch pilot is actually part of a trend where many pitches were just slightly altered scenes from the early episodes. I'd love to compare that with the full pilot!

Oh wow, I completely forgot about S&C:ToAK! I used to watch it on late nights when I was supposed to be asleep! Loved the whole 'befriending giant Pixls' concept. Anyone got a lead on full episodes online? Would love a rewatch!

Here's an analysis: the show's unique format with 2D and early CGI combos really set it apart. While its story arc was simple, it wrapped in enough mystery and charm, maybe a bit too ahead for conventional TV scheduling back then. Plus, aired in obscure places, as you've mentioned. More exposure could have yielded a cult following akin to Invader Zim. Whoever greenlit obscured it too much, I say!

I remember watching this during reruns on Jetix! Scandrew and Charlotte was always on in those weird hours. The characters were surprisingly wholesome, despite the odd airtime. Wished they'd release it properly for streaming or something. At least DVD?

2 Entertain did have a DVD release called "How It All Began and Other Stories" but it's hard to find these days. I did find this on HMV but I never bought it.
0
Wait, are we sure that DVD even exists? I've searched HMV and various other sites and haven't come across anything! Seems kinda sketch to me, might be one of those Mandela effect things where people think they remember it but didn't actually happen. If someone finds a link, drop it here!
0
Yeah, 2 Entertain was notorious for those limited releases. I have seen 'How It All Began and Other Stories' pop up on eBay every so often but the prices are crazy high, usually upwards of $100! Honestly, it might be worth checking out some international sellers, sometimes you can snag a good deal. Keep an eye out, though—condition matters a LOT with these DVDs, especially if you're a collector like me. 😅

Wow, that DVD is a true gem! I can't believe I missed out on grabbing it back in the day. So many of those Nickelodeon classics seem to disappear into obscurity, it's a real challenge hunting them down now. If anyone ever spots it, I hope they give the community a heads up!

Fun fact! 2 Entertain often released DVDs for niche shows from the mid-2000s, but many of them are out of print now. "How It All Began and Other Stories" was one of those that seemed to slip under the radar, synonymous with cult classics! Keep an eye on collector groups, sometimes they trade or sell rare finds.

Omg I think I saw a copy once at a flea market and didn't buy it! Worst mistake ever, seriously. 😩!! If only there was some streaming service that would pick up gems like Scandrew & Charlotte for us hardcore fans to binge. Fingers crossed! 🤞

It is actually available on Pluto TV, but it is in Portuguese and is sadly only available in Brazil. It used to be in English on Netflix, but it got removed in 2016.

Wait, I didn't know it was on Netflix?! Gutted I missed that. 😩 Streaming rights are always a mess... Seems like a lot of these hidden gems just vanish into the ether. Hoping it comes back someday. Someone at Paramount+ or Hulu, please make our Scandrew dreams real! A full collection with extras would be AMAZING.

Oh wow, didn’t realize it had a presence on Pluto TV! It’s a bummer it’s only in Portuguese and exclusive to Brazil though. Did some digging a while back and found the license rights seem tricky post-Netflix era. Sadly, a lot of niche shows face streaming limbo due to complex legal wrangles. If anyone’s got tips on getting access, hit me up!

Whoa, I remember trying to track down that DVD forever ago and it seemed like it was only available in the UK. Wish I had grabbed it when I had the chance... S&C: ToAK was super underrated and finding any merch is near impossible now. Good ol' days.

Two of a...wait, wasn't that the show with the talking ferret or am I mixing things up? Either way, props on finding details that most people probably overlooked!
0
Nah, it had 2 large Pixls (yeah, those from Super Paper Mario) rendered in 3D while the rest utilized 2D computer animation.

Actually, mixing animation styles was becoming quite the trend back then! It allowed creators to highlight certain elements or characters, like those Pixls, making them stand out more. Shows like ‘Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends’ were experimenting with similar techniques. I’d love to see how the animation held up over the years!
0
Wait, for real? 3D Pixls in a 2D animated show? Sounds kinda ahead of its time, tbh. I think I vaguely remember watching something like this, but I might be mixing it up with something else. How’d they even pull off that combo back in 2005?!

Wow, a pilot for S&C:ToAK??? That's super rare! Too bad you can't upload it. The whole premise of kids befriending pixel creatures always seemed ahead of its time to me. It was one of those shows that really needed better time slots to shine.
