Hey y'all, just got here from Austin. This city is awesome but man, the rent is killing me. Is it always this crazy expensive living here? How does everyone manage? Any tips for a newbie to save some dimes?

Shopping secondhand is the way to go. Seriously, save a fortune on furniture and clothes with just a little bit of hunting. Hit up garage sales, flea markets, and thrift stores in the less trendy neighborhoods. You can find some real treasures for a fraction of the price.

heyy, it's all about the hustle here. Like gotta make side gigs work or find a job at a startup that throws in some perks or even stock options. that rent is killer unless you're pulling in good money. check out multiple income streams to stay afloat if your 9-5 isn't cutting it.

Got lucky with a rent-controlled place a while back, otherwise, I'd be toast. These are gold but harder to find now. Keep an eye out for them or sublets in older buildings. Sometimes tenants need to move but can keep their lease. That's ur ticket to somewhat affordable living here.

Eating out in SF doesn't have to break the bank either. There's a ton of hole-in-the-wall places that serve up delish food for less. Meal prep and cooking at home helps too. Happy hour's best for cheap drinks. Check out the app 'Too Good To Go' for discounted food from bakeries and restaurants that would otherwise get wasted. Every penny counts!

Feel you on the rent spike. Coming from elsewhere it's a shock. I split a tiny apartment with two others. There's not much privacy, but it's all about compromises. Might find a better deal if you look hard enough, or consider living in a co-living space. They're popping up more and more.

Biking is your friend to save $$$! Forget about owning a car with parking prices being insane. Public transit can work but unreliable sometimes. Check out the local bike routes and get yourself a decent bike. It'll save you on both rent (by living a bit further away from the craziness) and on transportation.

Trust me it's not just you, the rent here is nuts. It’s all about the high demand and low supply, plus tech salaries blowing up housing prices. Tons of people have roommates to cut down costs or live further out in the East Bay where it's a bit cheaper. Sucks but that's the price of living in such an in-demand city.
