Microclimates & How to Dress For Them

You’ve probably heard of SF’s microclimates, but maybe you’re still finding yourself either freezing or sweating throughout the day. After years of experience, here’s the golden rule: LAYERS. Start with a light tee, add a heavier shirt or sweater, top with a windbreaker. And always, always have a scarf. You can thank me later when you're cozy in the Sunset and comfy in SoMa without changing once.

Layers work until you’re crammed into a Muni bus like sardines during rush hour. Then the real fun is trying not to pass out from heat while stripping off all said layers without elbowing someone in the face. A true SF skill.

All you newbies don’t know how good you have it with all these tech fabrics. Back in my day it was all about wool and leather. That being said, a waterproofed leather jacket with a hoodie underneath is still my go-to. Also, gloves. Always pack gloves.

As someone who runs the Embarcadero at dawn, can confirm the layer tactic is a must. But be careful with too many bulky layers. You want to be able to move freely, so look for compact, high-quality materials that give warmth without the puffiness.

I'll add – bring those pocketable down jackets. You can scrunch 'em into their own pocket and shove it in your bag. They've saved me at every nighttime outdoor event where it goes from toasty to icebox after the sun dips.

Layers, sure, if you want to look like a tourist from Ohio. It's all about smart choices. Wicking materials, people. Invest in some decent merino wool. It breathes when you need it to and keeps you warm when the temps drop.

Moved here from SoCal recently and the microclimate thing blew my mind. Like, I left my apartment in shorts and a tee, and was shivering by lunchtime. Learning the hard way, but these tips are gold, thanks!

haha layers, the SF uniform! I swear half my backpack is just contingency clothing. Got caught out on Twin Peaks without a jacket once. Never. Again. 😂

Big yes to the scarf! But don’t forget a beanie too. One minute you’re enjoying the sun at Dolores Park and the next, Karl the Fog rolls in and it’s like you’ve been transported to the Wall in Game of Thrones. Beanie saves lives, folks.
