Totally agree with you on the ADR skills. Did you guys hear the German dub for 'Dark'? It was so on point, even the lip-sync was almost perfect. Makes me wonder how much time they spend just to match the lip movements alone.
The charm you're talking about is partly because of the more theatrical style of acting that was common in those early dubs, which can feel over the top today.
