What if cars never existed?

This is a neat thought exercise. Without cars, urban sprawl wouldn't be as big of an issue and cities would be way more compact. It's likely that residential and commercial spaces would be mixed to a higher degree, reducing the need for long commutes and thus encouraging walking or biking. …
