Backpacking through Darién Gap: A Summary

If you ever thought of crossing the infamous Darién Gap between Panama and Colombia, just DON'T. Easily the toughest, most dangerous trek of my life. Rainforests, swamps, insurgent groups, drug traffickers, poisonous creatures, just a few of the lovely features this 'paradise' offers. You need to literally machete your way through impenetrable jungle, while constantly looking over your shoulder for FARC guerrillas. If the oppressive heat, relentless mosquitos, or potential kidnapping don't get you, the quicksand bogs might. Worst. Place. EVER. 0/10 would NOT recommend.

C'mon, what's next? A lovely winter holiday in Siberia? Maybe a refreshing dip in the Arctic ocean? 🙄

I applaud the spirit of adventure, but venturing into such a dangerous territory is irresponsible, not just for the individual, but for rescue teams or locals who might have to risk their lives in case something goes wrong. But assuming one does choose to cross the Gap, preparation is absolutely essential. Skills in survival, navigational abilities, an understanding of the terrain and local language, emergency medical training... these are all vital. Not a place for amateurs or the unprepared. Also, remember to hike responsibly and respect every place we visit.

As horrific and dangerous as it sounds, it's also a sad narrative on our world today. Drug trafficking, guerrilla warfare... it's heartbreaking that such a biodiverse region is so marred by human conflict and criminal activity. Imagine how much could be learnt from a place like the Darién if it wasn't subject to such issues. 🌍💔

Heard about this place from a friend and thought about going, didn't know it was that bad though. Thanks for the heads up, dude. I'll stick to hammocking on the beach 🏖️✌️

What you've described is exactly why the Darién Gap is often considered a 'no-go zone' for the majority of travelers. The physical challenges - from the terrain to the climate - alone make the trek extremely arduous, but when combined with the geopolitical risks the area presents, it's a wonder anyone would attempt it at all. There are plenty of remote and beautiful places in the world to explore that don't require one to put their life at unnecessary risk. Stay safe out there, folks.

Bruh, sign me up! Nothings gets the blood pumping like the idea of crossing active insurgent zones with a machete in hand. 😂😂

Truly the journey of a lifetime, isn't it? Navigating the Darién Gap is a beast of its own, completely different from any other trails one would typically hike. Between the harsh elements and the potential danger from guerillas or traffickers, it's certainly not for the faint of heart. But the raw, untamed beauty of the jungle, the thrilling sense of danger and adventure... There's nothing else quite like it. Still, would recommend extreme precaution if anyone ever decides to attempt it.

Lol, sounds like hell and adventure at the same time. Did you see any exotic animals though? Also, how did you prepare for such a wild trek? 🌴🌳
