Flapjack’s ingenious escape - A chronicle

Meet Flapjack, my African Grey parrot. Brilliant and devious, he's masterminded something most prison break artists would applaud.

Flapjack's cage has a sliding metal door that is fastened with a small latch hook. This temporary prison (as Flapjack regards it) is rarely used except when we have guests over who are frightened of birds.

Yesterday, as we were expecting a few visitors, I moved Flapjack to his cage. After making sure he's secure, I joined the party. Little did I know that our feathery Houdini had plans of his own. As we're enjoying the ambience and the lasagna, Flapjack's 'I'm free!' squawk echoed through the house.

Rushing to see, we found him perched on top of his cage. He had successfully pushed the sliding door upwards, managed to unhook the latch, and slide the door open. All this just using his beak and claws!

The sight served as a catalyst for a hilarious pandemonium where half the guests were laughing while the other half ran helter-skelter. Ha! What a memorable meet-up! So now, I need to come up with a Parrot-Proof lock system - else, Flapjack will still be entertaining my guests in his own unique way!

This story made my day! 😂 Smart little guy, huh? Guess it's time for a trip to the hardware store for a Flapjack-proof lock. Good luck, mate!

Aww, what a character Flapjack is! My parakeet, Jerry, used to pull a similar trick. I got a snug fitting metal sheet on the outside that I slide down on top of my birdcage’s door after latching it. He was flummoxed for awhile until he figured out how to push that upwards too! Ended up getting a lock with a key. Parrots are just too smart! Keep us posted on your Flapjack adventures. Cheers!

LOL! Classic Flapjack. Who can resist a free party? Best invite he's gettin' all year! A party ain't a party without a bird on the loose. Thumbs up, mate! 👍

African Grey parrots, like your Flapjack, are among the smartest birds. They're known to have the cognitive ability equivalent to a 5-year-old human child. That's probably why he managed to outsmart his cage's lock system so easily. You might want to invest in a more sophisticated locking device. Just ensure it's one able to withstand his strong beak and curious nature. In the meantime, fun distractions inside his cage may also dissuade him from breaking free! Keep us updated on your next move.

Ya know mate, that birdie's got more brains than some blokes I know! 🤣 Seriously though, African Grey's are known for their intelligence. Perhaps you could try a combination lock next? Just make sure he isn't watching while you set it!
