So I got myself a nice secondhand car, thought it'd be cool to start doing my own maintenance. You know, become one of those car guys. About 4 months in, things were going great, hadn't spent a dime on garage maintenance. Fast forward to yesterday: the engine went Kaboom! right at the start of my 300-mile road trip. Did all the checks and turns out, I'd been using the wrong blend of motor oil all along. Word of caution folks, if you're gonna DIY, make sure you get the details right.

Been doing my DIY car maintenance for years now, definitely had my fair share of screwups! It's part of the learning process. Key is to take those moments and learn from them. Oh, and ALWAYS make sure you're using the right oil. Hope your future DIY projects go smoother!

Mechanic here.
Sad to hear about the engine blowing up. Car maintenance can be a bit tricky especially when it comes to the engine. The wrong oil can really put too much stress on your engine leading to what happened to you. Its viscosity is all wrong and it won't lubricate properly.
You said you were 7 months in, I know it sucks but don't beat yourself up. We've all started there. Just learn from this and remember that sometimes it's not just about saving money, but ensuring your car is properly maintained and safe to drive.

Ouch dude, that bites! You really gotta get the oil thing down pat. Every car has a specific oil they work best with and using the wrong one can seriously screw your engine up. You should've checked your car's manual, it usually has that info. Best of luck with fixing/replacing your engine! Next time, do more research before fiddling with your car. Believe me, been down that road before.
