How a small gum went to someone dying

In the 2000s, a man from Ukraine tried making gum. He wanted it so sour, he dipped it, chewed it, rinsed it, and repeated. But one day, the man accidentally placed it on an explosive, and then...BOOM! His gum exploded in his mouth, then his jaws got exposed, and he fainted, and he died, cold blooded.

Historian here, and while I can't speak to the veracity of this particular incident without more detail, I want to point out the broader point about the dangers of homemade concoctions and layman chemistry. Across history, there are countless examples of inventors and DIY enthusiasts who've suffered fatal accidents. Safety standards exist for a reason, and as we can see from this (alleged) incident, neglecting them can have dire consequences. This story, true or not, is a lesson against recklessness in experimentation.

I'll need to see some real evidence to believe this one. A lot of these stories turn out to be exaggerated or plain made up. If you can provide a link to a reputable source, I'm all ears. Until then, I'm calling urban legend on this gum tale.

Jeez, that's tragic. Kinda reminds me of that guy in the 19th century who invented a waterproof fabric but ended up being poisoned by his concoction. Weird historical deaths always have a lesson, like 'don't mix stuff you know nothing about'. I bet this story would fit right in a podcast about bizarre accidental deaths.

this sounds like something out of a cartoon, not real life. a sour gum explosion? guy must've been after the most extreme sour taste ever and took it to the next level. tough way to go out tbh

The chemistry doesn't sound right. Explosives aren't something you just 'accidentally' dip your gum into. They require specific initiating mechanisms to detonate, not to mention the majority are not just lying around for consumers to access. Either this guy was involved in something shady, or there's a huge chunk of this story missing. Would love to see some sources and get the full picture.

I've heard some wild stories on this sub but this one... wow. Just a cautionary tale about where you do your DIY experiments, folks. I'm curious though, what kind of explosive was it? Something he had lying around the house or was he in a place where such materials were common?
