During WWI and WWII, people used to disguise bombs as containers of food. When people touched the containers, they would explode. At least it wasn't harmful, since they were designed to be a joke by the soldiers. They even hid the real deal so when exploded the real deal would spill around the room!

Actually, there were instances of things like this happening, but it was no joke. I remember reading an article about how the SOE (Special Operations Executive) in WWII created explosive rats to sabotage German factories. They'd stuff a rat with explosives, and the idea was when the Germans found them in their boiler rooms and shoveled them into the fire, they'd explode, causing chaos and damage. Can you imagine if you were just trying to get rid of a dead rat and it blew up your workplace?

This sounds like a bad case of telephone game where facts get turned into fiction. Disguised bombs, sure, that's wartime 101. But designed to be a joke and make food spill around for laughs? That's not only improbable but would've been a cruel waste of resources during a time when food was scarce. Got any sources for this tale?

I had uncles who served in the Big One, and let me tell you, the only jokes they'd mention were the kind you want to forget. Practical jokes are one thing, but in the battlefield, anything resembling a bomb scare was taken dead seriously. Mischief had its place, sure, but when it came down to life or death, those boys weren't playing around.

The concept of disguised bombs has some truth to it, but not quite in the joke format you're describing. Both world wars featured a myriad of disguised explosive devices, tactical deceptions meant to blend in with the surrounding environment. The goal was often to inhibit the movement of troops or disrupt supply chains. Devices made to look innocuous could be everything from artillery shells disguised as rocks to explosive-rigged corpses in Operation Mincemeat during WWII. Humor was certainly used by soldiers to cope with the horrors of war, but the actual use of disguised explosives was no joke – they were a deadly serious part of sabotage and guerilla tactics.

Um, not quite sure where you're getting your information, but those 'joke bombs' sound like a myth. In wars, booby traps were definitely a thing, but they were designed to be lethal and demoralize the enemy, not as pranks. Plus, the whole spilling food idea doesn't really fit the wartime MO. Anyone else got more accurate info on this?
