Restoring a Commodore 64 - Tips & Tricks
Fellow vintage tech enthusiasts, I'm midway through restoring a Commodore 64 and it's been a trip! If anyone's looking to delve into this, here are some nuggets from my experience:
- Clean everything! Dust is your enemy and can cause shorts. Use isopropyl alcohol for the motherboard and contacts.
- Retrobrite for the win. If your C64 has yellowed, make a retrobrite solution (hydrogen peroxide, a little OxyClean, and some sunlight) to get it back to its original color.
- Faulty capacitors are common. If the image is wonky or it won’t power up, check and replace where necessary.
- For authentic feel, get an old TV or a modern solution like a Retrotink to convert signal to HDMI.
Always remember to take your time and enjoy bringing these pieces of history back to life. It's incredibly rewarding!
