Iconic Oz Film from the 90s??

G'day mates, I'm racking my brain trying to remember this film from either the late 90s or early 00s. It featured a quirky love story, set in a remote Australian town, and the main character had a peculiar job that involved the ocean, might've been a marine biologist or something similar? Notable for its dry Aussie humour and a soundtrack with both classic and indie Aussie rock. Cheers.

Everyone’s on a good wicket, but I'm gonna throw 'Muriel’s Wedding' into the mix. Early 90s, not really about the ocean, but it’s a comedy with an unforgettable soundtrack featuring ABBA. Toni Collette shines in this on the odd job front – she’s forever trying to find herself and her place.

Alright, here’s the sitch. You're not thinking of 'Bad Boy Bubby' by any chance? It's definitely an oddball flick and has some quirky “love” if ya can call it that, though it's a fair bit earlier than late 90s and not much about the ocean. Could be misremembering?

You lot are barking up the wrong tree! It's gotta be 'Love Serenade' from '96 with Miranda Otto and Rebecca Frith as sisters catching the eye of a new fella in town who’s a weirdo DJ claiming he's from Brisbane. That’s the dry humour and oddness right there.

Mighty thinking you’ve got ‘The Dish’ in your crosshairs, which is about the radio telescope in Parkes during the Apollo 11 mission. Not quite marine biology, but still sciencey and funny with some ocean of stars action. And those classic tunes!

Hey, I reckon you're thinking of 'Paperback Hero'. That little gem stars Hugh Jackman and Claudia Karvan. Jacko's a truck driver who writes a romance novel and Karvan's the savvy publisher. Set in rural Queensland, it’s got that Aussie humour and charm you're looking for plus a rocky soundtrack.

Sounds like you could be talkin' about 'Strange Planet' from '99. That one's set in Sydney tho, not a small town, but ticks the odd job and love story bits! If that ain't it, crack open a cold one and keep thinkin' mate!
