Hey, I'm actually an indie dev and your description reminds me of a project a colleague of mine made way back. It was called 'Lair of the Wyrm', sort of a tribute to the old pixel classics. I think only a few hundred people played it since it was made for a local game jam. Hmu if that rings any bells.

Oh those pixel days, miss em. Could it be 'Quest of the Crystal Castles'? Not dragons per se but there were dragon-like creatures. Indie, before indie was cool. You might wanna check out old gaming forums or eBay for a copy.

With pixel graphics, knights, and dragons, you could be referring to any number of games. However, given your description of it being 'so underground', you could be talking about 'Caverns of Khaos'. It had limited release, and not many know of it. The mechanics were rather unique with a combo of platforming and puzzle-solving.

Sounds like you might be talkin bout Dragon's Lair? It's got a knight and dragons, totally pixelated. Old arcade vibe. Not exactly underground but not everyone's played it outside of retro circles.
