Help! Dug out my old gaming console and I’m trying to find this game I was obsessed with as a kid. It was this sci-fi shooter where you fight against aliens or mutants? It was pretty gory for the time and had different weapons. I think the cover art had like a big alien head and maybe some green and purple color scheme? Would love to find it and play it again!

The color scheme you're describing with the big alien head is giving me big Area 51 vibes. That one's more arcade but it had a home version, too. Gore and aliens are right on, and home ports of arcade games back then tended to have some wild covers.

Not sure if this is the one, but Prey had some intense alien action, although it's from 2006. There's another game, Aliens vs. Predator, from the late 90s, but the cover doesn't match your description. Your best bet is checking out Duke Nukem or maybe Exhumed (also known as Powerslave in the US) if it was on the Sega Saturn. Good luck tracking down that nostalgia hit!

You might be referring to Half-Life? While not the late 90s, it debuted in 1998, and the cover's got that big alien, the Nihilanth, sort of. The game itself isn't as gory as others from the era, but it's sci-fi, got aliens/mutants, and a wide array of weapons.

Oh man, late 90s was like the golden era for those types of games! Aside from the ones already mentioned, don’t forget about Alien Trilogy. It was based on the Alien movies and pretty gory. The cover art fits what you described too. Lots of green and eerie alien vibe. Plus, you get to use all sorts of iconic weapons from the movies!

This definitely sounds like Duke Nukem 3D. Classic late 90s shooter with over the top gore and a bunch of different weapons. The cover art had Duke with aliens around, and it's known for its adult humor and gory gameplay. Might be what you're thinking of?
