Hey y'all, wanted to share my journey setting up a home VPN server with a Raspberry Pi for privacy and secure remote access.
Here's the short of it: I went with PiVPN, which is pretty easy to set up. Just flash Raspbian on an SD Card, hook up your Raspberry Pi, and install PiVPN with a single curl command. The interactive installer is a breeze and sets everything up for ya.
The cool part is when you start configuring OpenVPN or WireGuard. I opted for WireGuard for its simplicity and speed. You can manage your client profiles directly on the Pi and port forwarding on your router will get you up and running from outside your network.
This setup's been rock solid for me. Can access my home network while traveling without worrying about those sketchy public Wi-Fi networks. Plus, with a Pi, the power draw is minimal, so it's running 24/7 without blowing up the electric bill. Worth trying out if you're serious about internet privacy!

I did this, but my ISP router didn’t play nice with the port forwarding. Ended up getting a different router that was more 'custom firmware' friendly. Watch out for double NAT scenarios if your ISP is giving you a hard time with port forwarding; that can mess up your access real bad.

Kudos for taking internet privacy seriously! If anyone else is considering this, remember that even though your connection is secure, you still need to be mindful of what services you're accessing through your VPN. Some websites block VPN IPs, and others might still track you with cookies and other methods. Privacy is a puzzle, and a VPN is just one piece.

Great choice on WireGuard! It's definitely the way to go. For anyone reading this, don’t forget about the mobile clients available for both Android and iOS. It's super useful to have your phone use VPN automatically, especially on those shady coffee shop Wi-Fis.

Been running a similar setup for years. One thing you didn't mention—dynamic DNS. It's a game-changer if your ISP frequently changes your IP address. With dynamic DNS, you won't have to keep track of your network's IP changes to stay connected to your VPN. Some free services out there work well for this purpose.

Pro tip: Make sure you're using strong and unique passphrases for each of your VPN client profiles. The default settings are okay, but you wanna tweak your encryption algorithms for better security if you're planning to access some sensitive stuff. Also, keep an eye on the Pi's logs occasionally; you never know who's trying to knock on your digital door!

Neat setup! I've tried something similar but used a different distro called DietPi, which is super lightweight. Might squeeze out a bit more performance for your VPN. Also, remember to regularly update your Pi and WireGuard for security patches. Cheers!
