Budget NAS build success!

Hey y’all, who says NAS has to break the bank? Managed to build mine on a shoe-string. Found a used HP Microserver on eBay for cheap, threw in a few WD Reds I got on sale during Black Friday, and boom! Running OpenMediaVault like a charm.

Sure, it won't win any races, but it streams 1080p to my devices without a hiccup. Only running RAID 1, but hey, it's just movies and TV shows. If you're patient and shop smart, you can NAS on a budget too!

RAID 1 and 1080p streaming? That's my jam! Glad to hear it's working smoothly for you. Out of curiosity, what player are you using on your devices? I've been messing with Plex and Kodi but can't decide which is better.

You're an inspiration! So many overbuild their setups. Love to see someone sticking to their needs without overcomplicating or overspending. Simplicity and economy for the win!

Salute on the savvy shopping! I always preach that second-hand gear can be a goldmine for budget builds. If you ever wanna bump up storage, keep an eye out for shucking external drives. Can often get bigger new drives that way for less than you'd expect.

Hey, I'm looking to do something similar. Did u run into any troubles setting it all up? Also, how's OpenMediaVault for a beginner? Not sure if I should go that route or try something else.

Good luck with that RAID 1 when a drive fails and takes the other with it during rebuild. Cheap NAS setups always sound good until you hit the first roadblock. Keep backups of anything you care about!

Good to hear about another OpenMediaVault user. While RAID 1 is great for redundancy on a budget, have you considered snapshot features or ZFS for better data integrity? Could save you a headache if you ever have silent data corruption. Either way, solid setup for your needs!

Nice find with the HP Microserver! Love it when you can score good gear for less. WD Reds are solid, and RAID 1 should be plenty for media. Good job on keeping it frugal!
