NAS full, want to expand.. but how?

My Synology's packed to the gills with data n I gotta expand. Should I just buy bigger drives or add another NAS to the network? Looking to grow but don’t fancy spending a small fortune. Any cost-effective ideas are welcome!

I’d say check if your NAS supports SSD cache. Might not increase raw storage but speeds up access to your most-used data. Plus, it can be a cheaper interim step before full-on drive upgrades. Better performance without tossing an arm and a leg on new HDDs.

Just download more RAM while you’re at it, lol. Or better yet, store everything in a 'cloud'—like, a real one. Imagine the space savings. 😂

Okay, I'm gonna go against the grain here and suggest you look into data management before buying new hardware. Why not comb through your files and purge what you don't need? Or maybe compress some of the old stuff? Adding more drives consumes more power – think green!

umm so I heard there's something like offloading some stuff onto cloud storage? Could that save some space? idk, not an expert, just a thought

Listen here. Everyone's all like 'just get bigger drives' but what about redundancy? What if a drive fails during the RAID expansion? Huh? If it was me (and it was, three times), I'd opt for a second NAS. Keep the first as a backup. Safety first. Scale out, not up. Never risk the data!

had da same prob last year, just got bigger drives n swapped em out. worked good.

Sounds like you're at a crossroads my friend. It really boils down to NAS capabilities. If you've got the bays, swapping in higher capacity drives is the path of least resistance. On the flipside, expanding with another NAS? That's upping the complexity and your power bill. But hey, more NAS, more fun, right? If you're set on that route, consider a DIY setup with old PC hardware. Grab something like FreeNAS or Unraid and build it to your specs. Can be way cheaper and more flexible than off-the-shelf options!

Just slap in some larger drives my dude, it's usually the quickest fix. But remember: gotta do it one at a time to rebuild that RAID magic. Also, check out shucking external drives, sometimes you can snag a deal. Bigger drives, less cash 👍
