How do you protect your NAS from power outages/surges?

Had a scare last night when the power flickered. My heart skipped a beat thinking about my NAS! I’ve got a UPS but honestly, it’s an old one and I don’t trust it much. Looking for suggestions on keeping my digital fortress safe from the wrath of unstable power supply. What do you guys use?

Just picked up a UPS on sale and it's given me peace of mind. Look for deals and rebates, sometimes you can snag a good one without breaking the bank.

If you get a new UPS, make sure it has a feature that auto shuts down your NAS safely if the battery gets too low. Stuff like NAS and servers need to shutdown properly to avoid data corruption. And get a UPS with enough VA rating for your equipment.

It's not just power you gotta worry about. Consider your redundancy and backups too. RAID isn't a backup and if your NAS goes down during an outage, you could lose everything. So, UPS is a start but make sure you have off-site backups or cloud storage synced as well. As for the UPS, get online double-conversion type. Yes, they're pricier, but they provide the best protection and power quality.

That UPS is the lifeline for your NAS during outages. Don't skimp. I'd recommend a pure sine wave UPS as it's better for sensitive electronics. Also, size matters. Calculate the wattage needs of your NAS and get a UPS that can handle it comfortably. I use CyberPower for my setup, they've got a great line that's kinda tailored for tech junkies. Been rock solid for me.

IMO everyone should have a UPS but don't just stop there, make sure you've got good surge protectors in line before the UPS. Also make sure your insurance covers electrical damage, just in case. Better safe than sorry.

Had no idea you needed all this stuff just to keep a NAS safe. What's a good UPS brand?

So here's the thing: you definitely need to upgrade that UPS. Old UPS can fail without warning and that's a recipe for disaster. Look for a UPS with AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulation). This feature is gold as it helps maintain power without having to switch to battery during minor fluctuations. Also, get one with a user-replaceable battery—you'll thank me in a couple of years. Don't ignore the software side, too. Make sure your NAS is configured for a safe shutdown when the UPS battery gets low.
