Just set up my first NAS, feeling proud!

So I finally took the plunge and set up my first NAS, and guess what... It works! Went for a Synology DS220j with a couple of 4TB WD Reds. Not the fanciest setup, I know, but it's mine 😁. If anyone's hesitant to get started - just go for it. If I can do it, trust me, anyone can!

A DS220j, nice start! Ever thought about using it to host a game server or some retro emulation station? Bet you didn't think about that yet, did ya? NAS isn't just for boring data storage ya know!

Sweet setup for a first NAS! If you're into movies or music, using it for Plex could be your next project. It's pretty addictive sorting all your media and having your own Netflix kinda service.

Nice going with the new NAS! Just a heads-up, make sure to change default passwords and keep your system updated. Lots of horror stories out there with ransomware. Stay safe!

I'm totally new to this NAS thing and seeing posts like this is really encouraging. Got any tips for total beginners?

lol, the DS220j is such a baby toy. Hit me up when you rack some real hardware.

DS220j is tight but ever considered building your own? I did with an old pc and some freenas magic. way more customizable. but hey, welcome to the NAS club! it’s all fun and games till a drive fails haha.

Good choice on the NAS! Synology's UI makes it super easy so it's great for beginners. Make sure to look into proper backup setups though, RAID isn't a substitute for a good backup plan. Think 3-2-1 rule: 3 copies of your data, 2 local but on different devices, and 1 offsite. Saved me more than once!

Hey, awesome stuff getting that DS220j up and running! I've had mine for a little while now and those WD Reds are solid for a start. You think about what services you're gonna run on it yet?
