Are you even kidding me? Just sat down to take a break, opened my crisp new bag of chips, and guess what? More air than chips! I know manufacturers do this to protect the chips, but seriously? It's like 30% chips, 70% air. Couldn't they find a smarter solution by now? This straight up irks me.

I've been down this road before, my friend. I suppose the main issue is that manufacturers have to prioritize protection over quantity. Bagged chips get knocked around quite a bit during transport. Without that cushion of air, you'd end up with a bag of crushed crumbs instead of chips.
I'm no food scientist, but I think the issue is that chips are pretty fragile -- unlike, say, a bar of chocolate, which can take quite a bit of abuse and still remain intact.
Now, the balance is off quite a bit, I agree. The proportion of air to chips sometimes feels like a rip-off. The thing is, it would actually be easier to fill the bag completely, reducing the packaging cost. But then, it would just turn into a bag of crumbs during transit.
Manufacturers could work out some new protective tech, but would likely pass the cost onto consumers, meaning pricier chips. Until then, the chip gods have decreed that there has to be more air than chips, for now. Still, it is pretty annoying!

Packaging professional here. I get your frustration, believe me. The 'air' you're complaining about is actually nitrogen. It's there to displace oxygen that would otherwise turn your chips stale and rancid. Your chips would be in shards if not for that cushioning 'air'. It's a delicate balance, but I agree there could be room for improvement!
