Help! Trying to find an old RTS game from the early 2000s, it was a freeware thing, looked like a starcraft clone but it was all robots? it had a weird name like 'RoboConflict' or 'MetalMayhem'... used to download it off those '1000 games!' CDs. if anyone can remember the name or a source would be super great thanks!

Not sure about 'RoboConflict' or 'MetalMayhem' specifically, but there was a gem called 'Future Conflict' that was kind of similar. It wasn't as big as the other titles from that era, but it had a die-hard community. If that's not it, check out 'Heavy Metal: F.A.K.K. 2' - not an RTS, but the name fits the bill and the era.

You might wanna check out 'Warzone 2100'. It was released as open source a while back. Not exactly 'RoboConflict' but all about robots and RTS. You can download it legit from their website these days. Could be what you're thinking of, maybe?

Sounds like you're describing 'MechCommander'. It was pretty popular in the freeware scene. Classic game, brutal AI. Try checking out abandonware sites, they usually archive these old classics and you might find it there. Definitely worth the replay!
