What happened to the original print of 'The Thief and the Cobbler'?

I just learned about this crazy story that the original version of 'The Thief and the Cobbler' was almost completely destroyed and got re-edited so many times. Anyone know if the true original version still exists somewhere?

What if the original print is locked away by some studio exec who didn’t want it to see the light of day? Think about it. Stranger things have happened!

Even with all the re-edits, there's still something magical about this movie. Can't believe so much of it got lost though. If you love animation, the Recobbled Cut is a must-watch!

Good luck finding the 'true' original version. If it existed, it’d be in the hands of unicorns and Bigfoot. 🤣 But seriously, the Recobbled Cut is as good as it gets for now.

So, the 'Thief and the Cobbler' is a fascinating example of a project that sadly couldn’t escape development hell. Richard Williams definitely had a vision, but due to multiple delays and financing issues, the original was never fully completed and got taken over. What’s out there now is a patchwork of different cuts. There are snippets available, and some fans have done incredible work to piece it together as faithfully as possible.

I just started getting into lost media and this movie's story is so heartbreaking. All that work for almost nothing. 😢 Hope someone finds some more footage someday!

Dang, this story about the movie is wild! I watched the recobbled cut on YouTube. It's actually pretty good, considering what they had to work with. Sad we're probably never gonna see the original tho.

Richard Williams, the director, worked on 'The Thief and the Cobbler' for nearly three decades. Sadly, the original print faced numerous complications including financing issues and corporate meddling. Some parts of it exist, mostly in bits and pieces, but a complete, pristine original version? Nope. Most likely gone.

The original version, often referred to as the 'Recobbled Cut', was painstakingly assembled by a fan named Garrett Gilchrist. It's not the exact original, but it's the closest thing we've got. Some original elements are preserved, but a lot was lost. Check out 'The Recobbled Cut' on YouTube if you haven't already!
