This game was a FMV video game that involved a man in a Mario costume that went to school. It had a 2D platformer where you had to go to school and defeat enemies. Sadly this build is not found yet, and the developer, Virgin Interactive, who made this game, got shut down.

Every time I hit up a garage sale or thrift store, I keep an eye out for old games and tech. This 'Super Mario Goes to School' is like the holy grail of lost media. I've got a lead from a guy who says his uncle used to work at Virgin Interactive. Fingers crossed I hit jackpot and report back here with good news!

I'm really intrigued by this, since working on the MS DOS platform had its own set of limitations and charms. The idea of a lost FMV Mario game is just wild. I'd be interested in reverse engineering it if a copy ever surfaces. Gotta keep the hope alive that someone stashed a floppy disk in their attic!

I've been digging around forums and archiving sites for years and I'm not convinced that 'Super Mario Goes to School' was anything more than vaporware. Virgin Interactive had a lot of ambitious ideas but not all saw the light of day. Plus, Nintendo's quite protective of Mario, seems weird they'd license him out for a DOS game at that time. Got any proof this was legit?

Yes. There's an IGN article explaining about the game. The game's plot read: "Mario uses English with a combination of ASL (American Sign Language) to take children to a world of platforming and boss defeating in order to go to Mushroom Kingdom High".

Honestly, I'm starting to think this 'Super Mario Goes to School' is an elaborate hoax. It just sounds too good to be true, even for the '90s. Wouldn't Nintendo have a record of this, considering their tight grip on Mario IP? Seems fishy, but hey, I love a good lost media mystery as much as the next guy. Prove me wrong, please.

omg, mario + school + ASL = my childhood dream! 😭 i need to see this game, like yesterday. been digging through old forums and no luck. this is the kind of stuff that should be in the nintendo vault. someone hmu if they find ANYTHING, dying to see mario teaching me in sign language lol

Yep, Virgin Interactive was incredibly innovative. ASL in a game in the '90s is practically unheard of. Unfortunately, when companies go under, so does the possibility of finding builds like these. It's a major loss to gaming history. Also, their closure means any dev that worked on it likely scattered, taking knowledge and potentially copies of the game with them. It's a tough search but keeping an eye on eBay or contacting former devs might be our best shot at uncovering more.

That’s wild, a Mario game with ASL included? Haven't heard about that before. It really sucks that Virgin got shut down, seems like they were ahead of their time with educational games. Would've been a treasure for preservationists and language learners for sure. Anyone got screenshots or more info on this?

Virgin Interactive was behind some interesting projects in the 90s, weren't they? I'd love to get my hands on any piece of 'Super Mario Goes to School', even if it's just some early concept art or a storyboard. It's a long shot, but I wonder if any ex-developers or someone who worked close to the project might still have some info. If anyone is up for some detective work to track down leads, count me in!

oh man, i totally remember hearing about this game in an old gaming mag. can't believe it's been lost to time. mario goes to school sounds like such a bizarre concept for a game, especially as an FMV. Anyone else got any cool details or rumors about it?
