Let's talk about the lost cult classic, 'Nightmare Carnival'. In my book, this late '80s B-movie horror holds the crown for being the most elusive lost media title. It's rumored that the only existing VHS copy was destroyed in a fire. But, let's not give up that easily.
As the tale goes, 'Nightmare Carnival' was a guerrilla-style indie horror flick centered around a group of unsuspecting tourists lured into a haunted carnival in some small mid-west town. The unsettling imagery and atmospheric score went a long way to create a truly eerie cinematic outing, or so say those who've allegedly seen it. One particularly chilling scene featured a grotesque 'Pin the Tail on the Donkey' game that went horribly wrong.
Online discussions claim that its off-beat humor and low-budget practical effects gave the movie a unique charm. It was one of those 'so bad, it's amazing' kind of films. Unfortunately, despite being a staple of late-night horror TV screenings, the film seemingly vanished into thin air, both in physical and digital form.
Do I believe it still exists? Absolutely! Underground cult classics like this don't just disappear. Somewhere out there, in the shadowy corners of a forgotten VHS rental store or an old-timer's attic, 'Nightmare Carnival' awaits rediscovery, inviting us back to its hellish merry-go-round.

Ah, 'Nightmare Carnival'... a real gem if ever there was one! I must've last caught it on late-night cable around '92. Damn freaky movie it was, way ahead of its time in many ways. It just had this aura of pure, unadulterated horror, partly due to the grainy footage and part plucky indie spirit. Finding a copy would be akin to uncovering the holy grail of horror. Keep the search alive!
