If it's really bad, you might wanna disassemble the radiator covers and soak 'em if you can. For the fins, take your time with a fine-tooth comb. There are tools specifically for this, like a condenser fin comb. Do it section by section, and don't rush it. Then finish it off with a homemade cleaner. Prevention's better than cure, so cover the radiator with a fine-mesh screen once it's clean to reduce dust accumulation.

Haha, had the same prob. Did you know they have these robotic dusters now? They're supposed to slip into tight spaces and do the job for you. Could be worth a try if you're not into manual labor. Otherwise, I'd just hit it with some compressed air and call it a day.

Professional cleaner here. You'll want to first turn off the radiator and let it cool completely for safety. Start with vacuuming using a brush attachment to suck up the loose dust. You can then use a specialty radiator cleaning brush—its long bristles are designed to get deep between those fins. Afterward, wipe down the exterior with a damp microfiber cloth. For tight spots, tie a damp cloth around a butter knife for precision cleaning. Consistency is key - make it a seasonal task and it’ll never get too filthy again.

I get wanting to avoid harsh chemicals, me too. I found this mixture of vinegar and water with a drop of dish soap works really well to cut through that grime. Then I use a fin comb, designed for air conditioners but works fine on radiators. Plus, those combs help straighten any fins you might've bent in the past. Good luck!

I've been there with my ancient abode, had to deal with the same issue. What you need is a radiator brush; they're made specifically for this job. It's a long, narrow brush that fits perfectly in between those fins. Scoot on down to your local hardware store, they should have one. And remember, be gentle. You don't wanna bend those fins. It's a bit of a tedious task, but it's worth it.
