Just moved into an older house and found something... alive? in the drain. It's brown and sludgy and keeps growing. Never seen anything like it. Do drains have their own ecosystem or what? Kinda scared to shower now lol.

Older houses come with their quirks, and drains can be a big one. Before you panic, might be worth it to get the house inspected—not just for the drain lifeforms but for any other surprises waiting. Better safe than sorry, especially when it comes to where you live!

I had something similar when I moved into my place. Turned out to be years of gunk buildup, just tons of hair and old soap and stuff clumping together. It's gross but not uncommon. Got a plumber to take care of it, drain runs perfect now. Good luck, man!

That's super fascinating, though I totally get why you'd be freaked out! Drains can actually have microecosystems, especially if there's a constant source of nutrients (like soap, hair, skin cells). It could be a colony of mold or bacteria. Some slime molds and biofilms can look really alien and expand rapidly. Still, I wouldn't recommend handling it yourself, who knows what's in there. Could make a cool post if you grab some pics before the clean-up crew arrives!

Sounds like you might have discovered a biofilm or some organic matter clogging up your drain, which is not totally unheard of in older plumbing systems. Whatever it is, don't touch it without proper protection (gloves, mask, etc.). It could be harboring bacteria. Best call up a local plumber or even a mold specialist to take a look before it gets worse. They'll be able to identify it and remove it safely.
