Was turning over the compost heap in my backyard this weekend and found a whole writhing mass of maggots. Never seen so many in one place! They were squirming through some old meat I must've tossed out. The smell alone was enough to make me gag. Seriously nasty stuff but kinda fascinating how they were breaking stuff down. Anyone else got any compost horror stories???

Actually, what you’re seeing is the lifecycle of the black soldier fly – they're not your typical housefly maggot. They're incredible decomposers and can process huge amounts of waste. Maybe disgusting to some, but it's a beautiful example of decomposition at its finest!

Expert composter here. Maggots, while unpleasant, are excellent at breaking down meat and high-protein waste. If you want to avoid them, keep meat out of your compost and balance your greens and browns. Remember, a healthy compost shouldn't smell bad—if it does, something's off balance.

One word: BANANAS! Left them out too long and when I chucked them into the compost, they turned into maggot city. Smell was next-level horrible, but it's crazy how fast they work on breaking down organics. Gotta respect the decomposers for doing their thing, right?

Ugh, maggots are the worst but hey, that’s nature’s recycling crew at work. Had a similar experience but with fruit peels, turns out I disturbed a fruit fly breeding ground. Gross but oddly satisfying to watch the cycle of decay and renewal 🐛
