They unionized for recess

You think you've seen everything, then boom, Monday morning and your class has formed a 'union'. They're demanding two recess sessions and no homework on Fridays. Sally, the ringleader, organized a 'sit-in'. They're on hour three and I'm out of coffee. Admin is NOT amused.

Channel that energy! Have them draft their 'demands' into a mock bill, 'debate' in class. Who knows, you might be nurturing future leaders... or at least get through the day!

Watch out, we're raising a generation of revolutionaries. Sally for president? 😜 But on a serious note, that's some grade-A organizing skill right there.

Listen, this happened to me. Do NOT show weakness. They smell fear like sharks. Stand your ground but also maybe slip in some education about fair labor practices lol

As a teacher and union rep, I can actually see this as a positive development, believe it or not. It shows your students are engaged, thinking critically about their environments, and are willing to stand up for what they believe in. Of course, you have to be the adult in the room and keep some boundaries intact, but acknowledging their ability to organize and offering compromise doesn’t have to be a bad thing. How about a proposal for one day each week where no homework is assigned, and they earn an extra recess for positive classroom behavior over the week? This way, they learn something about negotiations and you maintain control.

Why fight em? Join em! Demand your own coffee breaks and better admin support 😆

Power to the little people! But seriously, maybe use this as a teachable moment about civics? Could be a cool real-world lesson in there somewhere.

This is why I keep a secret stash of coffee in the classroom. For emergencies. Like unions.😂

Had a similar experience last year. Ended up having to negotiate with my 2nd grade 'union'. We reached an 'agreement' with extra reading time instead of a second recess. Hang in there!
