Mastering the 'Leave It' Command

Hey fellow dog enthusiasts! Mastering the 'Leave It' command can literally be a life-saver. Here's a step-by-step guide:

  1. Start with a treat in your hand. Show it to your dog then close your fist around it. Use the command 'leave it.'
  2. Ignore all the licking, pawing, and nosing. The minute they back off, give them the treat from the other hand.
  3. Repeat multiple times until they start to back off as soon as you say the command.
  4. Next, place the treat on the floor and cover it with your hand. Use the 'leave it' command again and reward for successful attempts.
  5. Gradually increase the challenge by uncovering the treat and practicing in environments with more distractions. Always reward from the opposite hand to reinforce that 'leave it' means they'll get something better.

Remember, patience and consistency are key! And always reward the good behavior.

Great guide, thank you for sharing. I believe that 'leave it' isn't just about obedience. It's about cultivating a deep understanding and synchronization between you and your dog. There’s a moment when you realize they’re not just avoiding the treat, but they’re looking to you for guidance, that's when you know you've both got it. That's the real reward.

You've gotta integrate 'leave it' into play as well. My dog's a champ at nosework competitions because 'leave it' taught her self-control, which is super important for any dog sport. Dogs that can ignore distractions are happier and more focused. Pro tip: use higher value rewards when in distracting environments! Thin slices of hot dog work wonders.

Leave it, got it. Now how do you teach them to do taxes and make coffee?

Wow, if only my dog loved anything as much as she loves ignoring 'leave it'. Might give your strategy a shot and see if we can turn a new leaf. Or at least not eat every leaf we find on the ground.

What you've listed is a great start. But don't forget to sometimes 'fake out' your dog by telling them to 'leave it' then not giving a treat. Vary it up or they'll only obey when they smell food on you. That's been my experience with my three rescues. Also important, start integrating 'leave it' with toys and other things they wanna pick up, not just treats. Real world application, ya know?

Trying this tonight! Fingers crossed it works cause my pup grabs everything when we're out on walks.

Solid guide! I find that people often underestimate step 5. Practicing in different environments is crucial; otherwise your dog might only listen at home. Anyone else noticed that?

Love this step-by-step! Used the same method with my beagle and it was super effective. Now if I could just get her to master 'stay' we'd be golden...
