The History of Collies - From Sheepherders to Show Dogs

Collies are amongst the most recognizable and beloved dog breeds, but their journey from working-class hero to household name is fascinating. Known for their intelligence and loyalty, Collies originated in Scotland for herding. Queen Victoria's affection for the breed propelled their popularity in society.

Through selective breeding, the Rough Collie, with its luscious coat and refined features, became a symbol of status and was further popularized through literature and cinema - think 'Lassie'. Despite their show dog status, Collies still retain their herding instincts, are excellent in obedience, and are some of the best family pups around!

Collies are amazing but let's not sugarcoat their history. A lot has changed from herding to becoming show dogs, and not all of it for the better. We need to acknowledge that selective breeding for looks sometimes come at the expense of their health. If you're going to get a Collie, make sure it's from a reputable breeder who prioritizes health and temperament over appearance.

Magnificent breed, the Rough Collie. They truly epitomize elegance and grace. It's one thing to see their beauty in pictures, but another to see them gait around a show ring. Takes your breath away every time. Still, their propensity for genetic disorders due to selective breeding shouldn't be overlooked. Always important to keep advocating for responsible breeding practices.

This is so cool, I didn’t know Queen Victoria had such an impact on the breed's popularity! I always just associate Collies with Lassie. The Rough Collie's fur is something else - must require a lot of grooming though, right?

Lol, 'from Sheepherders to Show Dogs'. Sounds like the Collie got the best end of the stick in the doggo world, doesn't it? I mean, who wouldn't like a glow-up from working in the fields to lounging on velvet cushions and winning ribbons. But seriously, they are amazing dogs - just make sure you've got loads of space and time because they'll run your legs off!

Collies are the best, hands down. Lassie is what turned me onto them as a kid and I've been hooked ever since. I don’t have one yet but planning to one day. They just seem like such gentle and smart dogs.

Fascinating transformation for the collie indeed. Their history mirrors the evolution of many dog breeds from functional roles to companionship. It’s worth noting that even among Collies, there is variance in herding style. The Rough Collie tends to be more of a visual worker, while their counterpart, the Border Collie, is known for their intense 'eye' and crouching approach. The distinction in form and function between these breeds is the perfect showcase of breeding selectively for certain traits. And yet, they all share the keen intelligence and adaptability that makes them so beloved.

Absolutely love collies! I've had my boy for about 3 years now and he's the smartest dog I've ever owned. You're so right about the herding instinct - he tries to herd the kids when they're running around in the yard 😂
