Hey y'all, I've seen so many pups rocking cute sweaters these days and my question is - is it just a fashion statement or do they actually need them? My lab seems fine without one but my neighbor insists her chihuahua can't do without. Thoughts?

As a vet tech, I can say some dogs do need sweaters, especially those prone to cold or with certain medical conditions like arthritis, which can flare up in cold weather. It’s not just about temperature; it's about comfort and health. But if your lab's doing ok without one, that's pretty normal.

Sweaters can help with temperature regulation in certain breeds that are less equipped for cold weather. However, it's also important to not overdo it or the dog could overheat. If your dog is shivering, acting lethargic, or holding paws up off the ground a lot, then I'd consider clothing of some sort. A good rule is to always monitor your dog's behavior and comfort level when deciding on adding layers.

I think it really depends on the breed and their coat! Labs are usually pretty hearty but smaller dogs with thinner coats can get chilly, and a sweater helps. Plus, they look adorable. Just make sure it fits well and isn't too tight or itchy for them.
