Ah, the golden age of search engines! AltaVista’s prime was during a time where the internet was less commercialized. Its technology, notably the backrub link analysis algorithm, laid groundwork for future search tech. However, it wasn't sustainable. But agreed, variety in our digital tech giants could have yielded a very different internet landscape today. Google's dominance has both positively & negatively impacted how we access information online.

Interesting take. AltaVista had its place in history, but tech moves forward for a reason. The search algorithms we have now are simply better at parsing the vast amount of content on the web. Still, I do agree that the ads are overbearing sometimes.

While I share the sentiment, our nostalgia probably overlooks some of AltaVista's shortcomings by today's standards. Before its decline, AltaVista failed to keep up with the emerging algorithms and tech Google was pioneering. People tend to remember the past with rose-colored glasses. The modern web requires more sophisticated search tech than what AltaVista could offer at the peak of its popularity. It was great, no doubt, but let’s not forget why it faded away.
