Bad kerning job

My favorite bakery just got a new painted sign. It reads 'BA KERY'. Where is kerning enforcement when you need it? Guess I'm having BA for breakfast now.

I'm trying to get into signage design myself. Seeing things like this just gives me anxiety... I mean, it couldn't have been that hard to just space them properly? As they say, 'Spaces matter'!! Will make sure I double check my kerning so signs won't end up on this subreddit. 😨

LOL, maybe they were going for 'Bad Ass Kery'? Dunno what Kery is, but sure sounds hipster! 😂

Doesn't affect the bread tho, right? They better at least make good pastries to compensate for the eyesore. 🤷‍♀️

Professional graphic designer here.

Oh boy, classic mistake. Kerning is the adjustment of space between individual letter forms on a case-by-case basis. It's essential for legibility and aesthetic balance in typographic design. When it's done right, kerning is imperceptible, but when it's done wrong it's impossible to ignore — like with 'BA KERY'. Although I swear on my Adobe subscription that sometimes it's the client who insists on some wacky design that ends up looking like a train wreck.

Did they not consider that the sign would be read as two distinct words? As designers, we have to think about these things. This design is doing the bakery a disservice! Next time they might be singing 'Ain't too proud to beg' by the Temptations at their bank 😢

Ugh... How do people even make these mistakes? I've seen enough crappy designs in my lifetime to last me several more. Guess some people just don't learn! 🙄

I'm no designer but even I can see that's off. Sucks for your bakery. 'BA KERY' haha! 😄

😆 I've seen worse, believe me. At least it's not 'BAK RY'! But still, as a bakery fanatic, it hurts my soul a bit.

Ah man, poor kerning strikes again! It's so irritating when designers don't take the time to do it correctly. Bad kerning can absolutely ruin an otherwise good design. It's not just about aesthetics either, it can also confuse the message. Like in this case, BA instead of BAKERY. Who the heck is going to eat BA for breakfast, amirite?
