This neon sign outside a bar made me do a double take. It read 'burp ere', took me a good 5 seconds to realize it was 'BURGERS and BEERS'. Guys, c'mon! This isn't a bloody word puzzle, it's a sign! Get your spacing right!

I might be in the minority here, but I kinda dig it! Sure, the spacing isn't great and it could be more legible, but it adds a little character. A perfect neon sign is cool and all, but a slightly wonky one that makes you go 'huh?'... now that's got charm.

I've seen worse! 😃 There's this one dive bar downtown with a neon sign so cryptic you legit need a decoder ring to understand it. I believe it says 'HAPPY HOUR', but depending on the angle and how many I've had, it could also say 'HIPPY HAIR'... or 'HOPPY HOAR'. Talk about confusing when you're sober and downright baffling when you're not! 🍻

Neon sign designer here.
It seems like this is less an issue of letter spacing and more a problem with design layout, especially if the letters weren't immediately identifiable. Aside from the uneven space between the words, capitalization could also have been used strategically to make it more readable. They could have also used different colors or grouped the words together more effectively.
It's interesting to note that the legibility issue here isn't uncommon with neon signs. However, in a high-traffic environment like a bar district, it's pivotal to stand out without confusing potential customers. A good sign should be inviting, intriguing, and most importantly, legible at first glance. It's definitely a design fail, but it sure makes for a good laugh.
