Olympic Mascots: A Masterpiece or Disasterpiece?

Haha, I still can't forget the Olympic Mascots from Beijing 2008! They look like the unholy offspring of a teddy bear and a clown on acid trip. Props to whoever designed them, you gave me nightmares for days! Next time, maybe keep things simple? Or you know, not make mascots that look like they crawled out of a horror movie.

There's also another mascot called Fu Niu Lele for the Beijing Paralympics.

I think Fu Niu Lele was actually a super cute mascot! It had dancing accessories and it's round body made it look extra cheerful. I have a miniature figurine of it on my desk, it always makes me smile when I look at it! :)

Fu Niu Lele, took me a sec to realize that's not a typo. well if they were designed to be memorable, they're doing a great job cuz i'm gonna have nightmares about this lmao

As a designer myself, it's not always easy to create a mascot that suits everyone's tastes. Fu Niu Lele represents a cow, which in Chinese culture symbolizes strength, perseverance and pushing forward. It was a fitting symbol for Paralympic athletes who overcome obstacles everyday. So it's really more than just a weird design to some people :)

Hahaha, Fu Niu Lele... man that's even worse. I don't know who comes up with these things but they need to slow down on the creativity juice. :D

These mascots were a clear representation of post-modern disillusionment thrust upon the masses under the pretense of entertainment and cheer. Truly, a sign of the inevitable downfall of aesthetics in society.

Oh come on, they weren't that bad! Honestly, I've seen worse in a Disney movie. I'd love to have one as a keepsake!

Oh I thought they were cute! Sure they're a little... quirky. But isn't that part of the fun? Or... Is that just me?

Not all mascots are created equal. London 2012? That was a disaster. Now the Talokis from the 70s... those were mascots!

They should do away with mascots really; half the time they're utterly ridiculous, and the other half they're just plain scary. Like we're there for the sports, not the mascot parade.

As a designer, I actually don’t hate them. They are really iconographic and memorable. But yeah, they do look like part of some twisted toy-story-sequel.

Lol I thought I was the only one who had nightmares about those mascots. Seriously, who thought 'Let's combine the innocence of a teddy bear with the horror of a circus clown?' Genius, pure genius!
