Maybe the update reset some settings? Check in the app if there's an option to toggle the ads off. I mean, sure it's a dirty move, but sometimes it's just a bug y'know.

This is actually a violation of several consumer trust and fair advertising practices, depending on your jurisdiction. You have a right to the product as it was sold to you, minus ads. Check the user agreement and terms of service that were in place at the time of your purchase—they can't legally change the deal without your express consent post-purchase. Might be time to file a complaint with the consumer protection agency.

Classic bait and switch, gotta love the good old 'everything's a service even after you pay' model. Next thing you know, they'll introduce 'ad-premium' tier to remove the ads you weren't supposed to get. 🙄
