A deep dive into deceptive free trial practices

Okay, so I signed up for this audio book service free trial, right? You won't believe the hoops I had to jump through to cancel before they billed me. First off, NO clear info on how to cancel at all—had to practically become a detective. Finally found it, hidden deep in a help article. And THEN, they make you CALL and wait on hold forever just to cancel the subscription! And don't get me started on the 'special offers' to stay when you just wanna cancel. It's a CLASSIC negative option billing scheme, designed to make you forget to cancel so they can snag that sweet, sweet membership fee. We need to call this crap out!

Has anyone tried canceling RIGHT after signing up? Just to see if the system glitches and you keep the trial benefits without worry? I'm half-tempted to sign up for stuff just to mess with ‘em and document the craziness.

New here, but not new to trial traps. I’ve read stuff on behavioral econ and it’s classic tactics to use hurdles. They rely on 'status quo bias'—we’re more likely to stay put if it's hard to change. Smh, keep a close eye on ‘em next time.

Those 'special offers' always get me. It’s nearly as if the whole canceling rigmarole was a ploy to pitch them to you while you're mentally exhausted from just trying to leave. Sneaky af.

This should be ILLEGAL! They make you CALL?? It’s almost 2023, who even calls anyone anymore? And then they hold you hostage on the line with their 'please don't go' offers. It's emotional blackmail, I say! We really need to take these tactics to social media and shine the biggest spotlight we can on them.

Heh, welcome to the detective club. Pretty sure they hide the cancel button better than any easter egg I've ever hunted. But for real, I feel you, this stuff's infuriating.

So many free trials are set up like this—it's appalling yet perfectly legal in most places. Companies use 'negative option billing' because it works. Most folks just forget to cancel, and voila, profit! It's worth reporting them to consumer advocate groups or leaving public reviews to warn others.

Yo, that's rough! Always gotta set a calendar reminder for these trials. I’ve been burned before. Some gotta make money, but trapping us ain't cool. Next time, maybe try a prepaid card with just enough funds, so they can’t charge you after the trial?

Ugh, this is WAY too familiar 😒 Audio book trials are some of the sneakiest out there. It's like you need a PhD in Navigating BS to figure out how to escape without getting charged. These companies bank on us missing the fine print.
