Why are phone chargers still not universal?

Think about it, man. We can land probes on comets millions of miles away, but we can't settle on a universal phone charger? And why is that? So, man, they can keep selling us new ones every time they change the slot. You upgrade your phone, now your car charger, your portable battery, and your friend's chargers are all irrelevant. It's just a scam, I tell ya. Just another example of assholedesign screwing over the little guy.

Dude, just jailbreak your phone, mod your charger, download a generic power interface from the darknet and you're in business. What could possibly go wrong? 😜💀🔌

Engineer here. This ain't as simple as you're making it out to be. Different phones require different voltage, current, and also have different charging technologies (like fast-charging). So, while it's definitely annoying, it's not quite a scam.

I have like 10 different chargers for all my devices, swear I should buy stock in a cable company at this point. Charging should be as easy as connecting to a wifi network.

Another day, another dollar for Big Tech. We're all suckers for sticking with phones that need charging. Maybe the Amish are onto something... 🐴👀

A universal charger? Hell yes, sign me up! But my guess would be that each company wants their standard to be the universal one. So we’re stuck in this never-ending cycle. Some have started using USB type-C, though. Hope others will follow.

This is indeed a significant nuisance. Interestingly, there are concrete reasons behind it. Some manufacturers use proprietary chargers to ensure consistent power delivery, thereby preserving battery life and device durability. But, yes, this practice is a source of unnecessary electronic waste and can be seen as a form of consumer manipulation designed to maximize profit.

Totally feel you, bro. It’s a pain lugging around a different charger for each device. You'd think they'd have figured this one out by now, ffs.
