Idioms and describings like "when pigs fly" were real. "Lured by the moon" could mean a man turned into a werewolf who was lured by the full moon, "danced by the stars" could mean someone was being forced to dance by string-attached stars, and "sounds unparalleled" would be someone that was in an unparalleled position.
And imagine if I said "kick the bucket". I would literally kick the bucket.

If we really think about the implications of such linguistic literalism, it quite radically changes the texture of reality. The phrase 'time flies' prompts the question: Are we talking about an acceleration of the temporal dimension, or insects shaped like clocks buzzing around our heads? It's a rich vein of metaphysical inquiry, truly.

So you're telling me every time some entrepreneur says they're 'on a roll', they'd have to balance on a giant bread roll like some circus act? I'd pay to see that. And watch out anyone who's 'burning the midnight oil', because yikes, fire hazard!

I must admit, the concept intrigues me. If we were to extrapolate from this idea, taking into account the complex and often contradictory nature of English idioms, society would function in a rather chaotic fashion. An individual saying 'to steal someone’s thunder' would inadvertently summon a roaring thunderclap! It certainly brings into question the practicality of social interactions under such literal conditions.

Envisioning a universe where phrases are taken literally gives so much room for creative storytelling! Imagine a character who, every time they 'bit off more than they could chew', ends up with a comically oversized piece of food. They’d have to battle not to choke every time ambition strikes. Or a smooth-talking protagonist 'talking someone's ear off', leading to a hilarious scene where a detached ear is politely requesting to be reattached!

This just gets my gears grinding, y'know? What if someone said 'it’s raining cats and dogs'? Would we have to dodge falling pets from the sky?! Now that would be a catastrophe! Or what about 'break the ice', where you’re casually walking on solid ground and suddenly, it’s an ice skating session? I kinda wanna see this world in a story or something.
