Ever seen an RPG where the main quest is to avoid the main quest?

Okay hear me out. Your character is the chosen one, destined to save the realm or whatever, but they are just so done with all of it. Instead of going on epic quests they're dodging every plot hook and prophecy trying to live a normal life. Build me this world where avoiding destiny is the main goal.

The whole point of an RPG is the heroic journey. Not sure how skipping the hero's call to fight the big bad would work as a game. But hey, could be a funny mod or something.

So, it's basically every open-world game ever, but instead of pretending the main quest doesn't exist while you help some old lady find her chickens, the game actually rewards you for it? Lol then count me in!

I'm absolutely captivated by the meta narrative potential here. It's a direct confrontation to Joseph Campbell's monomyth. 'The Hero's Journey' turned on its head where the 'Refusal of the Call' isn't just a stage, but the entire plot. You could dive deep into the psychological turmoil of a character destined for greatness who yearns for normalcy. Meanwhile, the world around them crumbles, relationships strain as allies beg them to accept their fate... There's so much depth to be explored in the dichotomy between destiny and agency. I can see it: 'The Layabout Hero: Procrastination is Your Power.'

Honestly would love a game where I ain't gotta save the world for once. Sometimes I just wanna settle down and grow some digital carrots in peace, y'know?

This is actually a brilliant idea! Gameplay mechanics could include a reputation system where you have to keep your 'Chosen One' status under wraps. Quest givers become suspicious if you decline too many quests or if you're seen mastering forbidden skills like...idk...potato peeling? As for the main storyline, the more you manage to blend into normal life, the stronger your legend becomes, ironically pulling you closer to the unwanted destiny. Could lead to multiple endings! I'd play the heck out of this.

Imagine if the final boss just gets tired waiting for the protagonist and starts doing the hero's job instead, becoming the realm's new beloved savior while the real hero's still trying to open a tavern or something. Would be a hilarious twist on the 'villain turned good' trope.

I just wanna play as the NPC who rolls his eyes everytime the 'chosen one' runs by chasing chickens instead of demons. Side quests are him trying to sell off his epic gear for farming tools, and convincing bards to sing about literally ANYONE else.
