Hey guys, I've got this character who's... well, let's just say he ain't your everyday Joe. He's got a secret. A big one. But, I'm blanking on the twist. Something crazy, unexpected. Got any ideas?

Fantasy fan here! How 'bout he's the last dragon shapeshifter, hidden away as human to protect him as a child. The elders erased his memories to save him. Slowly, they start returning, by chance encounters with fire, fighting instincts taking over, healing faster. The twist - he's the 'monster' terrorizing the nearby villages when he can't control his shifts.

Make his secret that he's a serial killer - wait, nah, it's overdone... or that he's an alien... nope, old cliché... or a time-traveller... damn, also cliché... Hmmm... how about making his secret that he's boring as hell, just like your plot idea? 😉

In consideration of the hero's journey archetype, how about the secret the protagonist carries is himself? He split his consciousness at a young age, without any memory of it, to protect part of his psyche from trauma. At the climax, he's confronted by his other half. They merge again, becoming whole and dealing with their past.

Ever think about making him a creature of the dark? He's secretly a vampire, werewolf or something more obscure. The twist? Well, he doesn't know it himself. Only realizes it when he accidentally triggers his own transformation. All the signs were there, but he just didn't piece them together. 🌙

Hey, how about whatever secret he's harbouring influences the events around him in ways he can't control? Like, he unknowingly makes everything around him travel back in time, but only realizes it at the height of the story's climax. People and things around him have been subtly hinting this throughout your plot with small details. Your readers'll be gobsmacked when they link those together.
