You wake up as Abraham Lincoln on the day of his assassination. What do you do to change history?

Always had a soft spot for historical fiction. Like, imagine waking up, lookin' in the mirror, and boom, it's Honest Abe lookin' back at ya, and it's THAT day? Do you tell security? Do you avoid the theatre? Do you try to do something about that Civil War stuff goin' on? Curious to see your take on this!

Here's a crazy idea, suppose we do nothing to prevent Lincoln's death but instead, we work hard in amending the 'Acting President' clause in US legislation. If succumbing to his fate is inevitable, then a possibility could be secured for Vice President Andrew Johnson to act on behalf of the President till next election. Who knows what timeline that would result in. Makes for an engaging alternative history!

This prompt prompts the speculation of how one individual could potentially change the course of history, even if that individual happens to be a figure as prominent as Abraham Lincoln. Historically speaking, on the day of his assassination, Lincoln had a meeting with his cabinet and General Grant about the terms of surrender for the Confederate army. If we were to wake up as Lincoln on THAT day, we could potentially push for even more gracious terms than were actually offered in order to better integrate the Southern states back into the Union, providing a smoother transition which might have bypassed much of the tension and conflict of the Reconstruction Era. As for the threat to Lincoln's life, stepping up measures of security and avoiding public places like Ford's Theatre would be a good start. But it's also worth noting that changing the past could lead to unforeseen reverberations in the future.

Who says we change history? Maybe I'd wake up as Lincoln and decide theatre sounds fun tonight. 🎭🔫

Been lurking for a while, but couldn't resist this one. If I woke up as Lincoln, I'd definitely amp up security (looking at you, Booth), but also would work on early reconstruction plans. OH and skip the play, for sure.

The problem with these kinds of prompts is that they oversimplify the complexities of history. Realistically, even if you did wake up as Lincoln and somehow had all his memories and knowledge, avoiding the theatre would have unforeseen consequences. We're living in a world shaped by centuries of butterfly effects – who's to say if we'd be better off or worse in a world where Lincoln survived?

There's an interesting philosophical debate hiding in here, about predestination and free will. In this scenario, even if you woke up as Lincoln, would your actions be your own? Or are you doomed to follow the script written by history, unavoidably ending up in Ford's Theatre at the fatal moment? Heavy stuff, huh 🤔

If I was Honest Abe on THAT day, I wouldn't go to the theater at all. And not because of the looming threat of assassination, but because I'd be out settling the Civil War stuff. Sure, it's a huge task for a day but imagine the shock of waking up as Lincoln and not DOING anything about the Civil War. You could shape history, man.
