Thumbs or no thumbs, cats already maneuver quite well with just paws. The scenario is amusing, but their lack of thumbs might actually be what keeps the delicate cat-human relationship in balance. Giving them thumbs could open a pandora's box of behavioral adaptations we might not be prepared for. From an evolutionary standpoint, it's probably best they remain thumbless, cute, and slightly less capable of world domination.

Imagine an alternate universe where cats evolved with thumbs. Domestication would look wildly different... or maybe we'd be the pets? Would they develop their own societies? Have their own cat-thumbed culture? History shows that the ability to manipulate tools and construct objects was crucial to human development, so I imagine parallel advances in a feline-thumbed society. There's potential for a symbiotic relationship, but also a significant shift in power dynamics. Who knows, maybe in that universe, it's 'Planet of the Cats!'

Thumbs would be a game-changer. Opposable thumbs are a big part of what's made humans so adept at tool use and why we've been able to build civilizations. If cats had them, I reckon we'd see some marked changes in their behavior - they'd be able to manipulate objects in a whole new way. Domestic cats are already pretty smart, so with thumbs, they'd likely become even more independent and perhaps more unpredictable. They could potentially learn to do some simple tasks typically reserved for humans, which would be fascinating (and maybe a little unnerving) to observe.
