what if cars didnt exist

okay seriously how different would our cities look if cars were never invented? would we all be super fit from walking or would we have come up with some other transport? crazy to think about how much we designed our world around cars

Guess we’d be fit from walking or we’d just invent something else lazy like rolling chairs on tracks lol

Probably we’d have more small local businesses surviving since no one would travel to malls or big box stores if they had to do it without a car. Stronger local economies maybe?

Might be alone here, but I think we’d all be better off tbh. More engagement with our surroundings and with each other, more appreciation for local places. Not to mention the aesthetics of cities built before the car takeover are just so charming. We miss out on that charm with car-centric designs.

Without cars, urban sprawl would be way less of a problem. The demand for mass transit solutions like rail networks would be huge. Cities would be much more densely packed, with residential areas closer to commercial zones to minimize travel. We'd prioritize walkability and biking infrastructure. And trust me, we'd still have a sedentary bunch; humans are great at inventing ways to do less work.

Realistically, we would have come up with some other form of transport, like more advanced trains or even personal drones by now. Humans always find a way to move faster and more efficiently. But definitely, there would be a more community-centered vibe to cities without cars. More local shops, less sprawl, and probably a huge uptick in public transport innovations.

Back before cars were the norm, cities were actually a lot smaller and more compact because everyone had to be able to walk or take a horse everywhere. With no cars, I bet we'd have kept up with that trend. Public transport would be super important—like, more trains maybe? And a lot of stuff would be about the same distance as the old 30-minute walkable city models they used to base towns on. We’d see more horses too, probably?

Wow, this is an awesome thought! Cities would probably be way greener with more parks and community spaces since we wouldn’t need all those parking lots and wide streets. Can you imagine more bike lanes and pedestrian paths everywhere? Plus, air quality would be AMAZING without all the car emissions.
