Tudor recipe for you all - Buttered Beere

Hey weird history peeps, you gotta try this. Buttered Beere, a Tudor England classic. Yeah, it's beer with butter. Here's how to make it, old style:

  • Take 1 quart of ale, find something not too modern, ye olde craft beer maybe?
  • Warm it up on the stove, but don't let it boil or you'll kill it.
  • In a separate pot, melt a chunk of unsalted butter.
  • Mix in cloves, a couple spoonfuls of sugar, and a pinch of nutmeg into the butter until it's all nice and spiced.
  • Then, beat in 3 egg yolks. Yeah, you heard me, INTO THE BUTTER.
  • Once your ale's warm, pour it into the buttery-eggy-spice mix and keep stirring.
  • It gets frothy and smells weird but trust me, it's like nothing else you've tasted.

Give it a go and travel back in time with your taste buds. Cheers!

Done this!!! It's freakin' wild, tastes so different from anything else. You definitely get that historical vibe, feels like you should be in a tavern discussing politics with a powdered wig on. If you're not sure about trying it, I say just go for it! Waaay more fun than reading about it, trust me 😂

Okay, color me intrigued! Buttered beer feels like a bit of a hipster bar stunt but with that historical twist, I'm down! Gonna pair this with some rustic meat pies and see how that goes. If nothing else, it'll be an experience, and that's what food's all about, right?

lmao, why don't you just throw in a loaf of bread and make it a beer sandwich while you're at it

Okay, but hear me out - any ideas on how to veganize this bad boy? I'm all for weird historical recipes, but my gut says a big no to the dairy and eggs. Maybe coconut oil and a plant-based milk could work. Has anyone tried a vegan version?

Whoa, this is time travel in a cup! Really want to try this, though the egg yolk part sounds kinda iffy. Do you think we could use something like pasteurized egg product instead to avoid any... you know, time-traveling bacteria?

Fascinating stuff! Buttered Beere really captures the experimental nature of Tudor cuisine. It's the kind of drink you'd find at a sumptuous feast table. I believe it was considered quite the health drink back then, imagine that! Also worth noting for the true history nerds, the ale should ideally be a bit sour - the way most beers were before hops became the go-to for flavoring.

No way, beer with butter? I thought I'd seen it all when it comes to craft brews but this is new. Gonna hit up the local brewery for something old school and give this a whirl. Cheers for the recipe!
