Why we need to stop hyping vapourware

Seriously though, how many times we gotta fall for this? I mean, I love a good 'what if' debate but at some point we have to accept some of these titles are just... never gonna happen. It's like devs know they can throw a sick trailer and get free hype for an idea that's just that - an idea. What do you actually think the chances are of seeing anything like 'Beyond Good and Evil 2' in the next... idk, decade?

The thing with Beyond Good and Evil 2 and others like it is they're not just games—they're worlds. They're complex narratives and universes ppl get attached to. The anticipation is part of the experience. Personally, I dissect every trailer, every interview, every tiny scrap of info. Is it frustrating when it doesn't materialize? Absolutely. But those brief glimpses of 'what could be' fuel my imagination like nothing else. It's a double-edged sword.

I'll chime in here with a bit of a reality check. Making games is hard. Like, really hard. And the bigger the promise, the harder the fall. But guess what? It's a business. Hype sells, pre-orders pile up, and investors get interested. It's a model that works, financially. Ethical? Maybe not. But it's not going away anytime soon.

Honestly, it's the hope that kills you. Now I just expect everything to be vapourware until proven otherwise. Saves a lot of disappointment. 😒

This is why I stick to the classics. At least when I fire up my old console, I know exactly what I'm getting. No promises, no let-downs, just pure, unadulterated gameplay. Remember when games were finished at launch? Good times.

Lol, ya'll still falling for these tricks? Trailers are just eye-candy thrown by the corporate overlords. Wake up sheeple! 😂

From a dev's perspective, it's not always about 'hype'. Sometimes projects get shelved because of funding, team disputes, or tech issues. It's a massive undertaking. Granted, some studios might play the hype game, but for every vapourware story there's a legit reason behind it. The industry's messy. Also, who wouldn't want to see their dream game come to life, even if it's just a trailer?

I know we've been burnt before but I can't help it, I'm still hopeful! There's always that one project that defies the odds and makes it through development hell. Remember Duke Nukem Forever? Okay, not the best example... but still, I gotta believe!

Eh, it's a cycle, isn't it? Tease something awesome, watch everyone lose their minds, then it fades into nothing. Rinse and repeat. I'm not holding my breath for Beyond Good and Evil 2. We might see some indie devs pick up the slack with similar concepts, but that big-name title? Doubtful.
