LOL dubbed anime sounds like they're all on helium

why does every english dubbed anime sound like the VAs sucked on a helium balloon before recording? 😆😆😆 can’t take any of it seriously, it's just too funny. original japanese VAs ftw, change my mind.

Sound design is crucial in film and that applies to anime as well. Poor dubbing can ruin the ambiance. It's not just about the pitch but the whole translation process, and cultural nuances are often lost. That being said, let's not ignore that voice actors put in a lot of effort; not an easy gig. The issue is complex and not always down to talent, but also direction, script adaptation, and production constraints.

i'm new to anime and tried a dub of My Hero Academia, didn't seem helium-ish to me?? Maybe it’s an acquired taste??

Idk I watch both subs and dubs. Sometimes it’s just nice not having to read subtitles after a long day 🤷‍♂️

From a voice actor's perspective, it's about matching the energy and lip flaps of the original, which can be a challenge. Japanese VAs are recorded in a group, playing off each other; English VAs often record solo, which can affect delivery. Directors sometimes push for that 'anime sound,' which is why you get the pitchiness. Some dubs nail it though! Cowboy Bebop, Fullmetal Alchemist, basically anything with Steve Blum’s gravelly voice is pure gold!

It's all about the original artistic integrity for me. The voice casting in Japan is no joke, VAs are like celebs. They gotta get it RIGHT. When it gets dubbed, it's like the character changes, and not in the good way. But also, not every dub is high-pitched, there are some decent ones, though they're like unicorns in a field of horses 🦄.

It's not always like that tbh, there are actually some dubs out there that do the original justice, it's just that the bad ones are SO bad they stand out more. The older anime tended to have the higher pitches and questionable casting, newer stuff has gotten a bit better. Still, subs have the advantage of delivering the OG feel. Plus, u get to hear the emotions as they were intended, even if you don't understand the language.
