Let's talk about script adaptation challenges

Hey guys! I've been thinking a lot about how localizing script is such a tightrope walk. Writers have to deal with cultural refs, jokes that don't cross borders, and just the overall context. Stuff that SLAPS in Japanese might be crickets in English lmao. So what's the wildest adaptation choice you've seen that either flopped hard or was surprisingly genius?

lol translators probably just use google translate and call it a day, I mean that's what I'd do. Who even watches the dub anyway, amirite?

I think it's genius when localizers manage to convey cultural elements with clever alternatives. Like how food references are adapted to equivalent dishes and slang is updated, feels like they truly understand both source and target culture!

People need to chill with adaptations. Often they're good enough, sometimes they miss, but do you speak Japanese? No? Then cut the translators some slack. It’s hard work getting it right.

Localization is an art, really. Some studios nail it. Ever seen the old samurai films redubbed into '60s American slang? Hilarious and somehow still worked. You gotta respect the craft when it's done right.

idk much about dubbing but I watched a movie recently and they gave a character an entirely different accent which changed the whole vibe?? like, from scary to comical... didn't sit right with me

Some of the best translations adapt the humor to something that works in both languages without completely changing the joke. Like, there's this one show where they turned a pun into a joke about a pop song, and it was both timely and hilarious!

Dubbing will never match the nuance of the original. Some things just shouldn't be adapted. Remember when they tried to westernize that anime by changing onigiri to jelly-filled donuts? Utterly cringe!

The Ghost Stories dub turned the script on its head and basically made it a comedy. Super controversial but you can't deny it brought a dead show back to life for a Western audience, so there's something to be said for taking risks!
