A Case for Better Writing in Dubs

Ok. It’s time we addressed the elephant in the room. The writing in a lot of dubs is just... lazy. They either translate it too literally and lose the original meaning, or they change it so much that the characters don't sound like themselves anymore. We need writers who actually understand the source material and the subtleties of the language. Who's with me?

lol, dubs are for people who can't read fast enough. 😆 Can we just talk about the times when they totally butcher puns? It's hilarious.

Okay, I get where you're all coming from, but let's not ignore the hard work that goes into dubbing. Localization ain't easy, and sometimes the script needs tweaking to cater to a different audience. That said, it shouldn't be an excuse for poor writing. Balance is key!

I've given up on dubs cuz they always mess it up. Subtitles all the way. At least that way I can hear the original emotion in the voice, even if the subtitles aren't perfect.

New to this dub vs sub debate but what's the deal with changing names to 'Western-sounding' ones? Totally throws off the character's origin for me.

As someone who works in voice acting, let me tell you, the problem runs deep. Good writing is key, but so is the direction. And let’s not forget the nuances lost in cultural translation. It's a team effort to keep the character's essence. Producers must invest in quality teams who really get the material — both in translation and voice direction.

Yep yep, preach! I watched a dubbed show last night and couldn’t help cringe at how flat the jokes fell. The sub version had me rolling though. Cultural nuances are super important, and translators need to actually understand them.

Dude, YES. Some of these companies think they can get away with just Google translating the script. It's totally disrespectful to the original content. They need to step up their game or just stop.

Completely agree with you. What bugs me the most is when dub scripts just don't match the lip flaps and you get awkward pauses or rushed dialogues. Breaks the immersion, ya know?
