In 1990, Nintendo pitched a build of Super Mario Bros. 4: Super Mario World to NES. The build was completely different than the final game.
The build had numerous differences: 1. Yoshi was absent in the video game. 2. The levels had a different layout. 3. Koopalings weren't present in the game. The bosses were always Fake Bowser. 4. The game had an 8-bit soundtrack. 5. The pitch was developed in 1990.
Unfortunately, the build was lost, and Shigeru Miyamoto said that he's archiving the build in his secret vault only he and the residents of these countries: Croatia, Serbia, Hungary, can use.

Fascinating! The fact that Miyamoto has preserved this piece of gaming history is pretty incredible. The pitch being from 1990 means it overlapped with the SNES development. Could this NES build be the link between what was and what could have been for the franchise? It'd be a goldmine for understanding the evolution of game design during that era.

SMB4 for NES looked like a different beast altogether. Yoshi not being there changes a lot of the gameplay we associate with SMW. For starters, no Yoshi means none of the special abilities he brought to the table, which for some levels in the original SMW was pretty crucial. Secret vault though? Sounds like Miyamoto-san's got quite the treasure trove of gaming history locked away!
